In how many countries is an IDP useful?
An IDP is a multilingual translation of your national driving licence that many countries and rental desks find useful. Acceptance and local rules vary by destination, so always check the specific country’s official requirements before you travel.
Which countries require an IDP?
Many destinations — such as Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Italy, Austria, Greece, Croatia, Thailand and India — commonly require an IDP for foreign drivers, especially when renting. Others accept it as a recommended translation companion to your licence. Use the explorer above to check each country.
Is the IDP accepted everywhere I drive on the left?
Yes. The IDP works whether a country drives on the left or right — it simply translates your licence. You still follow the local driving side and traffic rules.
Does any country not accept the IDP?
A few have special rules. Mainland China, for example, doesn't recognise the IDP and requires a temporary local permit. Always confirm the destination's requirements before driving.
Can I use one IDP for multiple countries on a trip?
Yes. A single IDP is valid across all recognising countries for its validity period, so you can drive through several countries on one permit — as long as you also carry your national licence.
How long is an IDP valid abroad?
